University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks an experienced and innovative leader as our next Associate Vice President, Tuition Planning (AVP) within the Office of the Senior Vice President & Chief Student Affairs Officer. Reporting to the Vice President, Student Success, the AVP has direct oversight and responsibility for the Tuition Planning team, which provides tuition and funding support for new and returning students. This role is responsible for ensuring that all students understand the options to finance their education, have a supportive experience through the process of completing those requirements, and for collaborating with other departments in implementing strategic initiatives related to student financial services.

Working closely with colleagues in Student Success and Admissions, as well as the Financial Aid and Student Accounts departments, this AVP will create partnerships to streamline administrative processes, improve the student experience, and facilitate student success. This role will ensure a proactive approach with students relating to Tuition Planning options including financial aid, student accounts, military tuition benefits, veterans' benefits, and other payment options. The AVP will direct long-term Tuition Planning outreach and engagement including communication with students about multi-term and full degree payment planning and tuition options. This will be accomplished through executing process improvements and overseeing the training and coaching of tuition coordinators to provide stellar service to all students as it relates to the long-term funding of their education.

The AVP will value a flexible work environment through a combination of in-person and virtual work opportunities and create a work culture amongst the team with the same. The AVP will compliantly manage the unit in line with both university standards of service and payment type specific federal, state, institutional, and other regulations.

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Continuously develops and enhances the approach, skills, and coaching of the Tuition Planning team to provide 'one stop shop' funding services to students
  • Creates a service organization that embraces student centricity, equity, and inclusion, with the goal of ensuring that every student knows and is encouraged to explore the opportunities available to finance their education
  • Ensures the delivery of exceptional customer service to all students and customers; provides timely professional responses to all inquiries and the processing of all team assigned funding related requests
  • Continuously explores new modes of communications and technology options to enhance internal processes and customer service, including virtual options
  • Organizes staff and fiscal resources in support of priorities and workload demands including hiring, training, and assignment of responsibilities
  • Provides a high degree of customized outreach, intervention, and efficient delivery of financial services to students and internal partners to meet enrollment goals through close collaboration with the offices of Student Success, Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and Academic Quality and Services
  • Continuously fosters an environment supportive of integrated services, mentoring, training, developing, and retaining staff to ensure individual and team effectiveness and efficiency in all operations
  • Communicates effectively with students through the university website, social media, online chats and chatbots, email and mail correspondence, campus-wide outreach, etc.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and institutional regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Provides best in class service using consultative and comprehensive approaches to tuition funding planning for each student. Ensure conversations are compliant and all leaders are providing coaching and feedback by regularly conducting observations and coaching to improve student interactions
  • Guides and directs leadership practices to foster a positive, equitable, inclusive, high performing environment that is compliant to all regulatory policies for both 100% remote and onsite teams
  • Serves as an innovative and strategic contributor to the leadership team in the office of student success, including training, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, addressing complaints, and resolving problems
  • Manages performance in a compliant fashion by establishing effective performance and productivity metrics and coaching to behaviors to positively affect results
  • Structures the workflow and staffing within budget to provide the highest level of service to students
  • Plans and implements change management processes (systems, business process, staff training, and communications) to ensure success business transformations
  • Other job-related duties as assigned

    Required education & experience: An earned Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning; at least seven (7) years of experience in higher education including at least three (3) years in higher education leadership and with a significant, proven track record of leading successful, high-performance remote and site-based teams; significant experience leading large, cross-functional teams in a non-matrixed environment; as well as success gaining buy-in across all levels of an organization from senior executives to individual contributors.

    Preferred education & experience: An earned Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning; ability to work in ambiguity, particularly relating to higher education regulations and compliance; proven ability to lead the implementation of complex projects from vision to successful launch; ability to interact and communicate with all levels of an organization, including senior management, and to articulately propose recommendations; ability to adapt to changes in a dynamic work environment; and an analytical and results-driven orientation, including ability to establish and improve metrics, processes, and associated performance behavior; skilled at coaching and developing (as opposed to a 'command and control' leadership style); ability to apply a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens to all people, processes, and business operations; as well as a particular ease, finesse, and discernment that results from organizational and emotional intelligence.
