Title: Scientist I

Location: Silver Spring, MD

FLSA Status: Exempt


Position Summary:

FDA/CBER's mission is to protect and advance public health by ensuring the safety and
efficacy of cell therapy products. To support this mission, OTAT/DCGT conducts research
to improve characterization of regenerative medicine therapies. Section 3011 of the 21st
Century Cures Act supports qualification of drug development tools. Currently, DCGT is
working to improve methods for characterization of stem-cell based products. This work will
require laboratory and investigative procedures using techniques such as flow cytometry,
morphological assessment of cells, protein and gene expression assay development, and cell
and tissue culture.

To obtain a Scientist I to support the research program of the FDA's Center for Biologics
Evaluation and Research, Office of Tissue and Advanced Therapies, Division of Cell and
Gene Therapies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

a. Independently plan, develop, implement, and manage all experiments and protocols
under study;
b. Perform, with technical independence, basic and advanced flow cytometry
procedures such as instrument start up and performance characteristics (QC/QA),
cell staining, sample acquisition
c. Design gating strategies and data analysis using different software including
FACSDiva and FlowJo
d. Optimize and conduct sophisticated analysis of morphological and flow cytometric
data including principal component analysis for quantitative cell biology
measurements.
e. Keep abreast of pertinent literature and incorporate appropriate concepts and
techniques into research activities and experiments
f. Collect, record, organize, and analyze experimental data. Summarize progress for
presentation at Branch and Division meetings and at research conferences, and
submit results for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal
g. Aid in general maintenance of the flow cytometry instruments by working with other
members of staff to keep the laboratory a safe and clean working environment and
replenishing used supplies from stocks as needed
h. Maintain thorough and complete government-owned records of experiments,
standard operating procedures (SOPs), and data in hard copy laboratory notebooks,
as well as in electronic versions made available to the PI and other individuals in the
laboratory


Minimum Requirements:

  • Scientist I shall have a graduate degree from an accredited
    Institution of higher learning (major in science).
  • At least three (3) years of experience in
    biopharmaceutical manufacturing, quality analytics, biotechnology research and development
    or other area relevant research program and the following:
  • Have a minimum of four years of experience working with immunology
  • Have a minimum of two years of experience in flow cytometry
