Job Description:

The Auburn School's Silver Spring campus is actively recruiting a Curriculum and Instruction Specialist (CIS: 12 month position) to join our leadership team at the start of the 2021 -22 academic year.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education or Special Education required
  • A minimum of 5 years teaching experience required
  • MSDE certificate or reciprocity preferred
  • Experience serving as a member of a leadership team
  • Extensive experience with coaching teachers through observations, co-teaching, curriculum resources and professional development
  • Successful experience with differentiation in reading, writing and math
  • In-depth understanding of learning disabilities and how to effectively plan and deliver instruction to meet students' present levels of performance
  • Solid evidence of highly successful teaching and learning strategy implementation
  • Expert level understanding of Instructional Leadership K - 8 across all subject areas

The CIS will focus on different ways to improve learning opportunities for students and staff, and provide additional supports to parents. Improvements are made through research, development, and testing of new curricula and teaching methods, selecting appropriate textbooks and materials for use in the classroom, advising teachers and administrators on educational needs and suggesting innovative ideas that will enhance teaching and learning. They must have the desire and skills to enhance and improve the teaching and learning within The Auburn School system. A successful curriculum and instructional specialist will work well in small and large groups and be able to teach, guide, and mentor other teachers and administrators, as identified. A critical part of this role will include the following in cooperation with the Head of School:

  • Providing individual or small group resource remediation, enrichment (or as needed) for students in reading, writing, and math (K-8)
  • Conducting classroom observations to make recommendations to improve classroom instructional environment in cooperation with other members of the leadership team
  • BE resident expert on curriculum, instructional delivery and assessment in The Auburn Model
  • Lead design and implementation of school schedule in cooperation with leadership team
  • Conducting classroom observations to create a developmentally appropriate plan of support for new teachers and teachers identified in need of additional support regarding planning, implementation, assessment and parent communication
  • Provide co-teaching/mentoring to identified faculty who may need developmentally/differentiated supports for instructional planning, delivery and small group lessons.
  • Provide administrative support in areas of testing, school operations, Parent Teacher Conferences, Student Support Team meetings
  • Provide parent trainings as needed
  • Assist teachers, instructional assistants, and parents in understanding the differentiated needs of the students
  • Developing curricula for new courses, supervising class content, implementing curriculum changes, providing timely and regular feedback and planning or advising on the technological materials and textbooks are among the typical tasks fulfilled by a curriculum and instruction specialist.
  • Provide information and guidance regarding a range of effective and innovative reading, writing and math practices through various activities such as: individual discussions (informal and formal), coaching sessions, demonstration lessons with pre- and post- discussion/analysis, study groups
  • Develop and monitor professional development schedule
  • Provides support and assistance to all classroom teachers in the full implementation of the school's reading, writing and math programs through data analysis/interpretation.
  • Conducts demonstration lessons to ensure that all teachers have been trained to an advanced level of delivery and are using the instructional materials as designed.
  • Assists teachers in building an interactive classroom and assures that recommendations for improvement are implemented.
  • Serves as a resource in identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to improve student achievement for all students.
  • Assists teacher in preparation pacing for instruction.
  • Participation in collaborative grade level meetings and Professional Learning Communities to assist in the analysis and utilization of assessment data to improve the focus of instructional planning and student achievement
  • Provide small group instruction to students as needed in reading, writing and math
  • Work cooperatively with cross campus CIS staff regarding cross campus recommendations and adoptions of instructional materials and programs
  • Maintain student instructional data base
  • Monitor report cards and progress notes
  • Monitor and participate in Student Support Teams
