Job Description:
As a Radiation Physicist, you will be responsible for internal
contacts, conducting investigations and fact finding.
Job Responsibilities
- Collaborates with physicians in subject specialty regarding all
patient uses of ionizing radiation.
- Attends any hospital assigned committee such as the Radiation
Safety Committee.
- Maintains a professional working relationship with department
directors and Medical Directors.
- Provides Medical Physics coverage as deemed appropriate to the
subject specialty (i.e. Radiation Therapy, Cardiac Cath,
etc.).
- Collaborates with Engineering concerning radiation shield
design for all areas of the hospital which utilize ionizing
radiation.
- Oversees the acceptance of testing for new or renovated medical
equipment and imaging networks.
- Performs calculations/measurements to institute new
treatment/imaging techniques and to investigate established
techniques in greater detail.
- Reviews new calibration protocols and verifies, by experiment
and computation, the impact they will have on clinical
applications.
- Investigates/evaluates new equipment and improvements to
existing equipment so as to reduce costs/downtime while increasing
efficiency/accuracy.
- Compares data with other radiation therapy
institutions.
- Stays abreast of clinical and dosimetry literature in subject
specialty.
- Stays abreast of policies, plans and personal practices per
subject specialty.
- Develops and maintains contacts with physicists in other
practices.
- Confers with physicians throughout Inova Health System
regarding patient dosages, equipment evaluation and quality
assurance.
- Cooperates and adheres to state/federal regulatory agencies in
demonstrating compliance with applicable rules and
recommendations.
- Confers with vendors of equipment used in practice (e.g. Linear
accelerators, MRI, CT etc.) concerning purchase specifications,
acceptance testing, proper quality assurance and routine
maintenance.
- Maintains dosimetry in accordance with applicable rules and
regulations.
- Discusses radiation exposure as it relates to medical
procedures with patients and other members of the public.
- Delivers physics lectures to Inova personnel concerning
radiation matters.
Qualifications
- A master's degree in Physics or a related field is required, a
doctoral degree in Physics or a related field is preferred
- Minimum 3 years experience in Clinical Medical Physics
- The American Board of Radiology (ABR) certified
required
- Virginia Inspector within the first two months of hire, but
must have submitted the application to the State at time of
hire
- Availability to work outside of normal business hours (nights
and weekends) is required
- Knowledge of scripting is preferred
- Experience with Raystation treatment planning system is
preferred
- Prior experience with proton therapy is preferred
- Strong communication skills - both orally and in writing are
required
