Description The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) aims to conduct biomedical research that is responsive to U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Army requirements and delivers lifesaving products including knowledge, technology and medical material that sustain the combat effectiveness of the Warfighter. For more information about WRAIR, please visit **************************************** The candidate will participate in studies to identify and develop novel malaria vaccine antigens for testing in mouse models. These studies will be used to select novel vaccine approaches for further evaluation. Within these studies, we will follow recombinant proteins that will be purified to homogeneity for use as reagents/vaccine antigens in animal studies, then investigate the vaccine potential of these novel antigenic targets. The mentor will guide and train the participant to perform immunological and immunochemical assays such as, indirect immune fluorescence (IFA), ELISA, SDS-PAGE and western blots. In this collaboration, the mentor and participant will also perform and develop novel gene constructs for optimal expression in bacterial host cells. As it relates to these studies, the participant will learn to characterize immune responses, antibody and t-cell responses. Appointment Length This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for itional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. Participant Benefits Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following: Health Insurance Supplement. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE. Relocation Allowance Training and Travel Allowance Nature of Appointment The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Qualifications The candidate will have a B.S. degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Cell Biology or Molecular Biology. Basic laboratory skills such as sterile technique is desirable. A willingness to train with small animals, i.e. mice, is a plus. The ability to perform independently with limited guidance once appropriately trained is an advantage. Effective communication through written and verbal form is required. Good laboratory practices will be ensured.
